Indoor ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter

ADSL2+ / VDSL2
Splitter

SPLTR-VDSL

$40.95

Ship Wt = 0.7 lbs
This splitter fits most needs so well
that we no longer offer any other DSL splitters.
The ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter is compatible with ADSL, but has improved filtering for the entire 20kHz-30MHz frequency range for ADSL2+ or VDSL2 used for Video over DSL applications such as IPTV (Internet Protocol Television).  Whether your current plans are just for ADSL for internet access or you are planning to use VDSL2 immediately, this is the splitter you should select. Even if you're only using ADSL now, it has become increasingly likely that you will have the option to switch to higher speed VDSL2 service in the future, so it makes sense to select this splitter so that you will be prepared to upgrade your service without having to change the splitter.

The ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter has 6P2C RJ-11 jacks for the LINE, PHONE, and MODEM connections and IDC connectors parallel to all three jacks to allow easy tool-less direct termination of unstripped wires as an alternative to using the jacks.

The small size of the PS-36 housing (0.9" H x 3.0" W x 2.0" D) makes it ideal for mounting next to a wiring block or inside a residential "media center".  Holes at the top and bottom make it easy to mount almost anywhere with two screws.

It is a "whole-house" splitter and not simply a fancy microfilter.

This splitter can be used for DSL wiring installation configurations discussed on pages An Overview of Wiring Requirements to Support Residential DSL Service, DSL Splitter Installation in a Star Topology, Installing the DSL Splitter Near the DSL Modem/Router, and Installing A DSL Splitter With An Alarm System

Note: You should definitely NOT attempt to insert multiple wires in the IDC terminals of the PS-36i-01; that will not work. If you have multiple voice cables that you need to connect to this splitter, you'll need some type of junction device, such as a 42A50 screw terminal block (offered below).

CAT5E CMR/CMX Cable
CAT5E CMR/CMX Cable
For most residential telephone wiring applications, the correct cable choice is CAT5E. CAT3 cable would meet minimum requirements for phone and DSL wiring, but does not cost significantly less than CAT5E. CAT5E cable is a good value because it is much higher quality cable. No appreciable improvement in voice or DSL signal will be achieved by using CAT6 or better cable that costs significantly more. Most cable suitable for outdoor residential use is normally less fire resistant and is rated CMX only. Cable rated CMR is more fire resistant, but most cable rated only CMR is not suitable for outdoor use. This cable is CMR/CMX, so it has the fire resistance of CMR and the weather resistance of CMX. The sheath is marked "WEATHER RESISTANT" and "CMR" to avoid confusion with less fire resistant CMX only cable. (In the past this same cable was marked CMR/CMX, but that caused confusion when some building inspectors were unsure about the fire rating of the cable, so the marking was changed.) This cable is ideal for all indoor and outdoor residential installations. That explains why this is the only type cable offered at HomePhoneWiring.com.

I used to get a lot of requests for information on where to buy cable, especially in lengths of less than 1000 feet. Every place I know of sells CAT5E cable in 1000 foot boxes or on larger spools. That's great if you're wiring an entire home or office complex, but if you are a homeowner and only need 100 feet to extend to a new jack or to wire your DSL data line, you probably don't want to buy ten times that much. So, by popular demand, I am offering CAT5E CMR/CMX cable in 100 foot lengths!

A 100 foot coil can be shipped at reasonable cost and may not be available locally. If you actually need a 1000 foot box, I think you'll find that your best option is to buy it locally due to the high cost of shipping a 30 pound box of cable. You should find similar cable in 1000 foot boxes at your local home improvement center.
CAT5E CMR/CMX Cable
The cable offered here is four pair, 24 AWG, CAT5E CMR/CMX, Superior Essex 51-240-31, cut to 100 foot lengths.

This cable uses the newest color code system, as illustrated here. The tip and ring wires are different hues of the same color. For example, pair one tip is light blue and ring is dark blue, pair two tip is light orange and ring is dark orange, etc. This makes it very easy to identify which wires are tip and ring for each pair.

The sheath is beige/gray. The manufacturer actually refers to the sheath of the cable that I stock as gray, but most people would call it beige. It comes close to matching most "khaki" clothing and blends well with most surroundings.

This is the same CAT5E CMR/CMX Weather Resistant Cable offered above, just custom cut to "by-the-foot" lengths.

If you are installing a DSL splitter you might only need a few feet of new cable to extend from the Network Interface Device (NID) to the splitter.

In the past, I didn't sell cable "by-the-foot" because of problems related to expeditiously processing cable orders that each required a custom "cut and coil" job without negatively impacting to speed of processing other orders. I was also concerned about the potential for waste and other problems related to managing partial "remnant spools" of various lengths. However, many customers buying splitter and wiring blocks regularly ask me about the possibility of buying just a few feet of the CAT5E CMR/CMX Weather Resistant Cable to facilitate connecting those items to the NID and I wanted to accommodate those customers if practical. After much consideration, I decided I could deal with offering cable "by-the-foot" on a limited basis with the restriction noted above.

Cable "by-the-foot" will be cut and coiled as a separate piece of cable. It CANNOT be added to the 100 foot length offered above to "extend" the length of that item.

Please comply with the restrictions on ordering shown above. It may be necessary to cancel orders that violate those restrictions, in which case the customer will be notified and it will be necessary to submit a new order.

Two-pair or four-pair cable can be terminated as described on the pages about wiring for a 2nd line, wiring for a 3rd line, and 2 line jacks to provide flexible access to multiple lines .

If connecting a CAT5E cable from a splitter for DSL, you can a pair from the splitter voice terminal to one jack for voice and different pair from the splitter DSL/MODEM/ATU-R terminals to the second jack for DSL.

These pictures above show front and back of the wallplate.  Click on these pictures to see higher resolution versions.  Note that color coding of the wires on these jacks matches the older "telco" system, which is normal for screw terminal jacks.

These wallplates are offered here in white or beige.

Style of actual jacks may vary slightly due to changes by the manufacturer.

Surface Mount 6P6C Jack These surface mount 6P6C screw terminal jacks can be used to terminate cable for voice or DSL.  The color coding of the wires on these jacks matches the older "telco" system, which is normal for screw terminal jacks.  These jacks have snap-on covers.  The jacks can be mounted on almost any surface either with screws (not included) or a double-sided adhesive pad (included).

I generally recommend avoiding surface mounted jacks and exposed cable in favor of wall plates with the cable routed concealed in wall voids in order to achieve an installation protected from damage with better appearance.  However these are offered here because there are occasions when a surface mount jack is the only practical solution.

These jacks are offered here in ash (very light grey - some would call this "putty" - this color is commonly used by telcos for surface mount jacks because it "blends in" so well), ivory (beige), and white.

Style of actual jacks may vary slightly due to changes by the manufacturer.

Ship Wt = 0.2 lbs
42A50-BLCK This small screw terminal connecting block is very useful for splicing 4 wires (2-pairs from a 4-pair cables) cables at an indoor location. If you have two or three inside wiring cables on one line and you need to splice them together for the voice side conneciton to a DSL Splitter, this is the least expensive solution. However, if you have more than three cables, it will be easier to use a 66 or 110 block than trying to deal with the "spider web" of wires that would be created by trying to use a screw terminal connecting block.

The screw terminal connecting block has a separate base and cover. The base has four threaded brass seats for the screws with washers. The cover attaches to the base with a "captive" screw at the center of the cover.

This site was created as a public service to provide information to help people complete small changes to their home telephone wiring. It was not conceived as a money making venture and I don't expect to get rich selling the few items offered here. Offering these products for sale is really just an extension of the concept of helping people complete their home telephone wiring projects at a reasonable cost. By purchasing products on this page, not only will you get a great deal, you'll also help me justify the maintenance of the site.
